Throughout the 1940s, forgers helped thousands of children escape Nazi France。 In this instant New York Times bestseller, Kristin Harmel reimagines their story。。。

Perfect for readers of The Tattooist of AuschwitzThe Librarian of Auschwitz and The Book Thief

In 1942, Eva is forced to flee Paris after the arrest of her father, a Polish Jew。 Finding refuge in a small mountain town, she begins forging identity documents for Jewish children escaping to neutral Switzerland。 But erasing people comes with a price, and along with a mysterious, handsome forger named Rémy, Eva realises she must find a way to preserve the real names of the children who are too young to remember their own identities。

When Rémy disappears and the resistance cell they work for is betrayed, the records they keep in The Book of Lost Names become even more crucial to remembering the truth。。。

A present day discovery of the book leaves researchers fascinated by its origins and desperate to decipher its codes。 Only Eva holds the answer but will she have the strength to face old memories and help reunite those lost during the war?

3。5 stars。 A good book!

One of the best WW2 historical fictions I’ve read in a long time!! Adored this!

A story of smuggling Jewish children out of occupied France during WW2, and one woman’s attempt to make sure their Jewish identities are not erased from history。

Loved it! I've read so many books set during WW2 and was disappointed at first to learn that was the setting。 However I loved how the story unfolded and told another story about amazingly brave people。 Theres hope and the question of who we are and what makes a hero。 I enjoyed her writing style and it was just a good book to cuddle up with。 Loved it! Loved this book。

Overall this was a great story but it received the high rating because I really appreciated the way it was written。 There were not the the graphic descriptions of violence that many WW2 books have。 I also appreciated that the author gave us the big "heart break" moments early and then built upon them, this way we were prepared when we got to those parts in the story Overall this was a great story but it received the high rating because I really appreciated the way it was written。 There were not the the graphic descriptions of violence that many WW2 books have。 I also appreciated that the author gave us the big "heart break" moments early and then built upon them, this way we were prepared when we got to those parts in the story 。。。more

Kristin Harmel writes a historical WWII fiction book dealing with hiding Jewish people。 Eva Traube is a French born Jewish woman living with her parents who left Poland years before to hopefully start a new life in France。 As the Nazi’s begin invading Paris, Eva and her mother flee and end up in a small town in what was called the Free Zone。 Eva finds herself helping a network of underground people forge documents for Jewish children so that they can smuggle them into Switzerland where they will Kristin Harmel writes a historical WWII fiction book dealing with hiding Jewish people。 Eva Traube is a French born Jewish woman living with her parents who left Poland years before to hopefully start a new life in France。 As the Nazi’s begin invading Paris, Eva and her mother flee and end up in a small town in what was called the Free Zone。 Eva finds herself helping a network of underground people forge documents for Jewish children so that they can smuggle them into Switzerland where they will be able to live a free life。 In the process of doing so, Eva creates a book with a code alongside her partner, the handsome Rémy, where they are able to preserve the real names of the children。 Sixty years later after Eva thought that the book was stolen by the Nazi’s and gone forever, she sees an article with her book and hops on the next plane to be able to reclaim it。 。。。more

More of a 3。5, but I may be judging it a little unfairly because I listened and I couldn’t stand the narrator。 She made the compelling lines sound like cheesy melodrama and I’m sure that isn’t the way it was written。 I also thought the ending was a little trite and sentimental, but I get why she did it。 Very compelling story though。

Book of Lost NamesWonderful book。 Captivating。 Sad, happy, hopeful。 It felt very real and possible。 Believable。 The writing kept me interested and not wanting to put it down

3。5。。。 Interesting focus but a few of the characters were very unrealistically awful and I'm not a fan of protagonists with lot of self-doubt and questions。。。 it did suck me in, tho 3。5。。。 Interesting focus but a few of the characters were very unrealistically awful and I'm not a fan of protagonists with lot of self-doubt and questions。。。 it did suck me in, tho 。。。more

Loved it; very interesting story。 Kristin Harmel is becoming one of my favorite authors。 This is my third book of hers I have read and she never disappoints!

This is absolutely one of the best historical fiction books I’ve read, by far。 I have such a hangover from this book。 I am so in love with all the characters, and the code the author created was just amazing。 I cannot recommend this book enough。

What a wonderful book! The reader had her part in this too。 I do loke books about war - learning about that sad period, about people, about lost hopes and sometimes new beginnings, about strenghts and wills I only can imagine。。。I know that these books are hard, but I choose to remeber only the positive aspects of them: the strog characters of people who were through pure evil situations, the love which bonded strangers in the name of right。。。

A must read

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Any time I read a book from this era I'm blown away by such "ordinary" and young people rising up to do extraordinary things。 This book completely fell in line with that trend。 This book is about people taking big risks to help others, rising to the occasion and longing to be with those they love。 And I will just say, (maybe a spoiler) but I LOVED the ending! It was so happy I listened to it twice on the audiobook。 Any time I read a book from this era I'm blown away by such "ordinary" and young people rising up to do extraordinary things。 This book completely fell in line with that trend。 This book is about people taking big risks to help others, rising to the occasion and longing to be with those they love。 And I will just say, (maybe a spoiler) but I LOVED the ending! Oh my heart。 I don’t even know how to leave a proper review for a book like this。 Suffice to say, when you start a book starring a young Jewish woman during World War II you have to be ready for your heart to break。

Janet

Thoroughly enjoyed this book。。。。a quick read。

Nicole Arguin

Stories like this move me beyond words。 If you were drawn into Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah, I recommend this。 If you read The Tattooist of Auschwitz, read this。 Highly recommend。

Cynthia Blair

Interesting story。 I didn’t learn from this book。 It seemed more fiction than history。 Maybe not。 I did enjoy it。 Easy read (listen)。 I needed something I could zip through in a hurry。

Lynn

I thought this book was great! Very well written and researched, I highly recommend it! Although Holocaust stories are never easy to read, this one describes some of the less known areas of assistance that was offered to Jewish children and others。 It is a realistic look at what happened to Jews in France and those who tried to help them。

Lindsay

It was a good story but not especially well written。 The characters had no depth。 The dialog was forced and uncomfortable。

Audrey Bolt

I’m in tears。 This book is beautiful。 I will reread it again and again。

Regina Fitek

This book was just ok for me。 I liked the last few chapters best but overall didn’t connect with this one。 Some of the characters were unlikeable and the plot seemed predictable。

Jody

I love WWII historical fiction and this was a great one! Highly recommended

Margo Shannon

Loved this book!

Siv

Thoroughly & Enjoyable well researched ww2 story

Amanda Smith

I felt like this book was decent but really slow until probably 300 pages in。 Great ending though so I’m glad I didn’t give up!
